About the job

The Journeyman runs the floor. You install, sand, seal, finish and repair hardwood floors to Old to Gold's standards without being directed through the work. You keep the customer updated every day the job is live, and you close the job out. On a crew with a Lead you run your own floor inside the Lead's job; on a one-technician job you are the customer's point of contact from the first call to the close-out. Company van, ongoing paid training, and a crew that rolls out at 7:00 AM.

What you'll do

  • Review the quote before you start so every quoted item gets done; note changes and the stain color on the quote and return it to the office.
  • Test and record moisture before work starts, before and after a water pop, and before each coat — there's a meter in every van.
  • Check the wear layer before you sand.
  • Run Old to Gold's sequence: 40 then 60 on the drum while the planetary works the perimeter, finishing every floor at 120. Blend edger and field so no ring or halo shows.
  • Seal and finish to the Pallmann system, and judge the finished floor the way the customer will: standing, in ambient light.
  • Work the Customer Experience Process milestones with the customer and complete the Customer Experience Checklist on every job.
  • Explain floor care, cleaning and the recoat schedule before you leave, and lock up the home the way the customer asked.
  • Keep the van stocked and maintained and the machines on a schedule, and help train new employees.

What we expect

  • You can be left with a floor: you work independently and finish on schedule.
  • You show consistency and leadership in problem-solving, patience and detail, and you know how to act in a customer's home.
  • You are the safety example the rungs below copy: respirators, hearing and eye protection, the rag bag, an ABC extinguisher in the van, dust off site daily, pilot lights off and detectors protected (and uncovered before you leave).
  • You follow lead-safe practices in homes built before 1978.
  • You work toward NWFA Certified Installer or Certified Sand & Finisher.

Where this goes The next rung is Master Craftsman. You move up by showing high-level skill in complex layouts, patterned floors (herringbone, chevron, parquet) and stairs, working confidently with clients on design decisions, and leading on quality, efficiency and mentoring.
